Newsletter #2 - March 15th 2021
From the Principal
It's been a while since our first newsletter this year, with lots of exciting events taking place so far this term.
Last Monday, we closed the school from Recess to allow for student-led conferences. The conferences focused on the students' creating a plan to achieve specific goals throughout the remainder of the term. One of the main outcomes we were hoping for was to model what goal setting looks like and highlight to the students that we often need others to help us to achieve our goals. A sincere thanks to all parents for supporting us with this trial by collecting students promptly at recess and coming back for your scheduled conferences. I sent a survey via text last week but please CLICK HERE for your last chance to contribute some feedback on the process.
On Wednesday 3rd March we had our first whole-school assembly. This was a great opportunity to welcome our new staff and students to Waddington. We welcomed Mrs Ibbitson, who is our new Music Specialist, as well as Mrs Ruthven, who teaches the Kindy/PP class on a Wednesday. We also welcomed back Miss Hoff, who is teaching Science and 3/4. We had our Kindy Kangaroo's group attend the assembly - their first every school assembly, and we look forward to seeing the Kindy Kookaburra's group at future assemblies. A huge welcome to our Kindy students and their families.
At the assembly, each class got up to explain what they have been learning so far in the year, with several classes putting on performances, topped off with a drumming performance by the Room 4 & 5 students. Well done to all the students, as well as the staff who organised these items. We're looking forward to Room 5s assembly, which will be on Wednesday 31st March.
On Monday 22nd February we invited a representative from St John to speak with the students from PP to Year 6 about first aid. The sessions they provided were lots of fun and it was wonderful to see the students so engaged. Students learned a range of things from what to do in an emergency (call 000!) to some basic first aid.
We have lots more in store for the students this term, with a Harmony Day performance this Friday at Mirrabooka Square. The Year 3 - 6 students will be performing a song in Auslan, which we are looking forward to seeing! Parents are most welcome to join us there, with the performance happening at 10:45am.
On the last day of term, Thursday 1st April, the P&C will be holding an Easter Egg Hunt for all students in the school from 2pm. Parents of the Kangaroo's Kindy group (who wouldn't usually be at school on a Thursday) are welcome to bring their children along to join in the fun!
The P&C will also be holding a raffle and are asking for donations of Easter eggs. If you are able to donate anything, please bring it into Reception. Mrs Newbury and Ms Bache have promised not to eat them all!
I will be taking the last week of this term off as long-service leave, as well as the first two weeks of Term Two, so I look forward to seeing everyone when I return at the start of May. Jemima Tomlinson, a school leader in Balga, will be Acting Principal throughout my leave.

Room 5 - Bunnings BBQ Camp Fundraiser
On Sunday 7th March at Bunnings Malaga, a number of generous staff and parents/grandparents volunteered their time to run a sausage sizzle to help raise funds for the Year 5/6 Camp at the end of the year.
A big thank you to everyone who was able to support with the preparations and throughout the day. A massive thank you to Mr Greer for organising his first (of many?!) sausage sizzle fundraisers.
It was a wonderful outcome with a total of $700 being raised from the day. The effort put into this will reduce each student’s camp cost by around $40!

Your child has been learning about the power of their internal dialogue – or self-talk. Thinking can be positive and helpful – your child now calls that ‘Supa Thinkin’ and negative and unhelpful thoughts are called ‘Stinkin Thinkin’.
Thinking is part of a very important process that governs feelings and behaviour. When something happens – an Event, you say something to yourself – Self-talk or Thinking, you develop an Emotion or Feeling which usually leads to a certain way of Behaving.
Here’s an example: You’re on the way to work and you realise that you’ve left the iron on. You were already late when you left the house.
We teach children to think about – and also change – their self-talk, which helps to shift the intensity of the feelings that they might have – and then also their behaviour, as in the example above.
A HIGHWAY HERO is able to change their self-talk from Stinkin Thinkin into Supa Thinkin. The ability for a child to monitor and manage their self-talk grows and develops as they get older – and usually much faster if they are taught about how to change their self-talk from StinkinThinkin into Supa Thinkin.
It is important to talk with your child about ways that they can change their self-talk into accepting and straightforward – rather than exaggerated or dramatic internal dialogue. Your child has learned some tips, tricks and tools this week. Here are a few ways to help your child move from Stinkin Thinkin to Supa Thinkin at home:
- Model it yourself. Say aloud to your child an occasion when you’ve had some Stinkin Thinkin, e.g., ‘I was late this morning because I left the iron on – and I had to come home. I was telling myself how silly and careless I was and it made me pretty frustrated and angry.’ Follow that up with what you said to yourself to change your thinking. ‘So I said to myself, oh well, guess I’m going to be late. Nothing I can do about it; better than having a fire at home. It will be OK.’ The more your child sees and hears you changing your self-talk, your emotional response and your resulting behaviour, the more likely that they will imitate it.
- Make some Supa Thinking posters and put them up at home – in your child’s room, the bathroom, behind the toilet door.
I’ll be ok. It will get better. Calm down. It’s ok.
Everyone feels sad sometimes. Nothing lasts forever, even feelings.
It will pass. This too shall pass. Tomorrow is another day.
- Encourage your child to journal – and this needn’t be boringly writing their deep thoughts into a leather bound book. A pile of post-it notes is perfect. On one side your child writes or draws their Stinkin Thinkin, and on the other, they write or draw their Supa Thinkin. Your child might want to put their Stinkin Thinkin post-it note into the bottom drawer in their bedroom, and then move it up to the top drawer when their thinking changes into Supa Thinkin.
