Newsletter #8 - August 23rd 2021
From the Principal
Welcome to Week 6 of Term 3!
It has been wonderful meeting all the beautiful families here at Waddington PS and getting to know all of you better. I have also been enjoying getting to know the students. We have had a busy few weeks! We had a wonderful incursion organised by Mrs Chivers from Perform! Education. It was called Bigger, Better, Brighter! And the students thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Our Year 5/6 students got back from Dwellingup last week after enjoying their three days of camp. They had an exciting time and were lucky enough to participate in rock climbing, archery, a commando course and mountain biking! I was fortunate enough to visit on Thursday and participated in some of the activities as well. I was impressed by how supportive all the students were of each other (and of me with a large fear of heights!). The teamwork they were displaying was inspiring. I would like to thank Mr Greer who had the camp extremely well organised and ensured the students had the best time possible along with Mrs Gray who went as well. We are very lucky to have such dedicated staff members.
We are going to be busy this week with our Book Week Parade on Friday at 9am. I encourage all of you to come along and watch the parade and then join your child in their class to read a book.
Our wonderful P&C will also be running a Father's Day Stall in Week 7. More details will be sent home with students in the coming week.
Another exciting event is our Faction Carnival coming up on the 8th September. Parents and families are welcome to join us for the day’s events and once again our amazing P&C will have some yummy food on offer.
One last thing, we would still love to have some more parents join us on our School Board, so if you think you might be interested, please see me.

Room 5 - Dwellingup Dare Adventure Camp
Room 5 has had a very busy Term 3. In the classroom we have been focusing on persuasive writing in English and learning about angles in Maths. We have loved the incursions for Book Week and Science. While the weather has been good, we have been getting outside and preparing for the faction carnival.
Most excitingly, last Wednesday the Year 5/6 class travelled to Dwellingup to enjoy a three-day camp. The goal of the camp was for the students to learn important life skills such as teamwork and cooperation and to push themselves out of their comfort zone. The students had the opportunity to participate in a team building games, commando course, night walk, crate climb, rock climbing, mountain biking and archery tag. Mr Greer and Mrs Gray were incredibly impressed with the way the students responded to all challenges with many of them facing and overcoming fears along the way. The behaviour on camp was fantastic and the students really showcased what we already know; Waddington Primary Students represent their school with pride.
This term in Highway Heroes we are learning skills about making and keeping friends, joining in games and responding to some of the difficulties that can occur along the way.
The ICE of the friendliness package of SPICE has been the focus of learning for the last few weeks.
Invite – asking to join in a game or activity.
Chat – finding common ground of interest to both parties.
Enjoy – whole body communication of friendliness.
Being included in games – rather than excluded – is an entry into friendship groups and belonging. However, an invitation to join in may not always be forthcoming, and so knowing how to get into others’ games, and also invite others into games, is a must-have skill. In Lesson 2 the children have been introduced to a new HIGHWAY TOOL – a variety of different Joining In Questions, such as:
- “That looks fun, any room for me?”
- “When you’ve finished that round, could I join in?”

Some children are naturally more anxious than others and these fears, worries and anxiety may include worries about school, social situations or physical harm.
