Welcome to Week 9 of Term 3!

What a jam packed few weeks we have had. Last week our students enjoyed The Great Veggie Crunch where they got to try some delicious vegetables. The students thoroughly enjoyed trying celery, carrots, kale and potatoes, however the radish wasn’t very popular! Check out the photos below.

Last week we also enjoyed our faction carnival. Kala won, but it was very close for a while with Meeka doing a fabulous job in keeping Kala on their toes. Our students worked hard, with so many of them running in multiple events and then participating in team games. Our Waddington PS values of Persistence, Kindness and Courage were on show for everyone to witness. We had a lot of parent’s/family members come to support which was fantastic. I would like to thank our amazing P&C for their huge effort in cooking up lunch for the students and also some yummy treats. Mr Greer worked tirelessly to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and he did a tremendous job. I would like to also pass my thanks onto our staff who also worked extremely hard throughout the day.

We have our School Board meeting this Wednesday (15th Sept) at 9:30am in the library. I would encourage any parents interested in joining to come along to the meeting and see what it is all about. The School Board has an extremely important role within the school and meets once per term through the year. If you have any questions about joining please come and see me, or send me an email at jemima.tomlinson@education.wa.edu.au

This will be the last newsletter for the term so I would like to wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday break for a fortnights time.

Room 9 - Learning about Jack and the Beanstalk

It has been a busy end to the term in room 9. The children are working hard to prepare for our assembly item in week 10, on top of our usual curriculum work. Our Talk For Writing text is Jack and the Beanstalk. We have planted bean seeds and have been watching them grow. The children have made posters of giants following a class discussion on adjectives that we could use to describe a giant. We have continued our daily phonological awareness sessions with the Heggerty Program. All students are working on blending and segmenting words, as well as identifying, changing, and deleting initial and end sounds of words. The Kindy students took part in their first faction carnival, with everyone running their best and behaving beautifully.

Room 9 also enjoyed taking part in the Veggie Crunch Day last week. Was great to see the students trying all the tasty vegetables.

The children have really enjoyed the change in weather, with the Kindy students working through the Fundamental Movement Skills program every morning, as well as all students being able to work outside with Mr Greer who teaches Physical Education every Wednesday.

Highway Heroes

Responding successfully to Play Refusals requires skill – which doesn’t come instinctively to most children; it needs to be taught. By ‘successfully’, the child is able to:

-          Respond calmly and confidently.

-          Avoid self-blame and harsh criticism.

-          Reflect optimism for future play opportunities

-          Demonstrate their skills in handling disappointment

-          Show they have other options for play.

-          Understand that these are common ‘bumps’ on the Highway.

The HIGHWAY TOOL of The Triple A’s 4 Refusals has been introduced to help your child navigate refusals in the playground.

The Triple A’s 4 Refusals

A for Accept:      Useful for normal refusals and requires a child to use positive and helpful self-talk, called Supa Thinkin. This would should like, ‘It’s OK. I’ll play tomorrow.’

A for Assert:       Useful for normal and nasty refusals and requires a child to use a confident tone of voice, body language and words to assert their position, and right to fair treatment.

A for Argue:       Not useful for any refusal, as it accelerates the negative interaction, and may have lasting effects on friendships.

Refusing to take “No!” for an answer can often cause issues in the playground. A child who is able to engage their positive and helpful self-talk, will minimise their emotional response to the refusal. Similarly, a child who is able to say assertively that the refusal is unfair or nasty, is less likely to be excluded on future occasions. Self-management strategies help children to make choices and response, rather than to ‘catastrophise’ – that is, to think the worst and react accordingly.

This excerpt has been taken from the book ‘Highway Heroes: Smart Life Skills 4 Kids – Module 2 Connecting 4 Friendships, ’ written by Helen Davidson and Claire Orange, Best Programs 4 Kids.

Faction Carnival Sausage Sizzle and Cake Stall

Term 3 has been a busy time for the P&C and on Wednesday 8th September we held our Sausage Sizzle and Cake stall at the Faction Carnival. We were certainly so lucky to have such beautiful weather and raised approximately $350 on the day.

Thank you for all those parents/carers who contributed during the day by providing baked goods to sell at the cake stall and/or helped with the sausage sizzle. Without support from the school community we could not have achieved this great result.

P&C Pyjama Day (Gold Coin Donation) and Pizza Lunch - Friday 24th September

Make a note on your calendar for the next P&C event!

On the last day of term, Friday 24th September, we are having a Pyjama Day. Look forward to seeing all the students and maybe even the staff coming to school in their pyjamas!! Students just need to bring along a gold coin donation and give it to their classroom teacher(s) on the day.

Another exciting P&C event on the same day will be a pizza lunch for students. Notes and order forms will be coming home this week. Keep an eye out for them.

Waddington Primary School Playgroup

Waddington PS provides families in the local area with children aged between 0 - 4 years a free playgroup.

Unfortunately due to low number we have not been able to run Playgroup this term. If you have a child(ren)  between 0-4 and/or your child(ren) will be starting Kindy in 2022, please contact Roseworth on the number below and we can start running Playgroup once again.

It's a great way to meet other families in the area and gives your child(ren) the opportunity to socialise with other children.
