Literacy and Numeracy
English and Maths form a major component of the curriculum at Waddington Primary School. The children are taught the Western Australian Curriculum in English and Maths and each class has both a literacy and numeracy block daily.
The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teaching and learning programs are balanced and integrate all three strands. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.
The Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics is organised around the interaction of three content strands and four proficiency strands.
The content strands are Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. They describe what is to be taught and learnt.
The proficiency strands are Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning. They describe how content is explored or developed, that is, the thinking and doing of mathematics.
