From the Principal

We are officially half way through the term and it has been wonderful to see all the children engaging so well in the classroom and beyond.

On Friday 7th August our brave Room 5 teachers, Mrs Ferraro and Mr Greer, organised a sleepover at the school for the Year 5/6 students! There's more information on this below but I would like to thank Mr Greer and Mrs Ferraro for organising this fantastic event for the students, which took place in their own time. We are so lucky at Waddington to have such dedicated staff!

As you enter the school grounds, you will notice a new sign welcoming everyone to our wonderful school (pictured above) - Wandjoo is the Noongar word for welcome. The students completed the artwork that forms the border for this sign during our NAIDOC Day celebrations last term. In smaller print, you will see the word welcome written in many different languages - see if you can find yours!

On the first day of term for staff, while the students were still on holidays, the Waddington staff learned about the importance of nature play and loose parts play. Last Wednesday, we had our first loose parts play session by extending our lunch play into our Design and Technology time to make for a full hour in the playground. During this time, the students had the opportunity to use their cooperative skills to create various structures and play areas for themselves. We had the opportunity to stand back and really see how creative the students could be, when left to their own devices, and saw some fantastic results (see photos above). We are looking forward to seeing more of this into the future. In the meantime, if anyone has any parts they think could be useful for the students to use, please get in touch.

A text message was sent out today with a link to a survey, which we would greatly appreciate all parents taking the time to complete. Your responses to the short survey will assist us to ensure that the school continues to move forward in line with our school community's values. We ask for your honest feedback to this anonymous survey. All completed survey respondents will go in a draw to win free swimming lessons for one child.

Lastly, at the last school board meeting our Business Plan (2020 - 2022) was approved and is now formally in place. Please CLICK HERE for a link to the business plan which outlines our priorities over this three-year period.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Room 5 - What have they been up to?

Students in Room 5 have had a busy start to term 3! Already, a highlight of the term was our sleepover on Friday 7th August. The students loved playing ‘Capture the Flag’ at twilight on the oval. We enjoyed toasting marshmallows, yummy pizza and a delicious cheesecake some students made with Mrs Ferraro earlier that day. The boys and girls versed each other in a ‘Minute to Win It’ challenge that had us all laughing! It was a huge success and something the students will remember forever! Thank you, Mr Keenan, Mr Greer and Mrs Ferraro, for organising an awesome event.

In week 5, the 5/6 students lead the school assembly. With the help of Mr Greer, they put together a spelling bee, family feud gameshow, video commercials and news items all based around our school value of ‘kindness’! The students did a fabulous job coming up with the ideas, creative props, videos and public speaking to the whole school. Well done room 5 students. It was awesome seeing all the students involved. Thank you, Mr Greer, for all your effort in coordinating the assembly.

While the term has already been so busy, students have continued to work hard in class. We have been learning the comprehension strategy, visualising, to help us develop a deep understanding of the texts we are reading. In writing, students have been analysing different compare and contrast pieces of writing, using a variety of graphic organisers and developing their vocabulary to be able to write their own compare and contrast piece. In maths, students have been learning multiplication and division strategies to help solve larger digit equations. Keep up the great work room 5, we look forward to the next few weeks of term 3 and all you will achieve!
