From the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are over halfway through the term! It is definitely moving quickly. We have had a wonderful few weeks with many of our classes back to normal numbers. It has been positive to have our students back and classrooms getting back into some normal routines.

We will have our Annual Public School Board Meeting this Wednesday (1st June) at 10:30am in the library. This is an opportunity for any of you who would like to know what happens at our board meetings to come along. We are always open to new members and would love for some new volunteers.

We received information last week from the Director General of Schools that we are able to make some changes to reporting for Semester 1 due to the COVID situation. I will be sending out a letter this week detailing what Waddington PS are following, along with some information about parent teacher interviews. I would encourage you to read through the information when it comes home.

Tomorrow 9:00am – 11:00am REDIMED will be here giving free flu vaccinations to anyone in our Waddington PS community. This will be happening in Waddy Hall. With the flu season upon us, I would encourage you to consider getting yours and your child’s flu vaccination. The advice from doctors is that this can greatly assist with keeping the flu at bay and due to our current COVID situation, this is vitally important. If you would like to book in, there is still time. Just use the link or QR code below to open up the booking system. I know that a few families have had trouble with the QR code, so please come and see us in the front office if you are unable to access the booking system and we can help you.

A note went out last week about our voluntary contributions and those who pay by Friday 24th June 2022 will go into the draw for a $50 Coles/Myer gift card. Voluntary contributions are important for our school as they assist us with buying resources such as exercise books, whiteboard markers, extra iMaths books and other essential items.

Lastly, a reminder that this Friday (3rd June) there is no school for students as we have a staff development day. The office will be closed from 12:30pm onwards as our front office staff will be joining us for some very important professional learning.

Kind regards

Jemima Tomlinson

Third Party Services Online Consent Form

Thank you to those families who have already completed their online consent forms over the past few weeks. We still have a few outstanding and it is important that we have all forms completed before the end of Term 2.

As previously explained this consent form needs to be completed to ensure the school has your consent to create an IT user account for your child and for them access websites and various apps used in the classroom.

Below is a link to the online consent form, if you haven’t completed this yet just click on the link below and it will only take 2-3 minutes to complete for each child.

If you have any questions or have issues accessing the online form, please drop into the front office and we can assist you.

Room 5 – Our School Leaders

As per usual Room 5 is very busy. In the classroom we are loving reading through our class novel, Holes by Louis Sachar and learning about multiplication in maths. We finished last term with some amazing stop motion projects.

We are so lucky to have so many exciting visitors to the school this term. Some of these visitors include: the bike mechanic who recently fixed some of our bikes in preparation for the bike riding lessons starting soon. West Oz Wildlife where we were able to meet some of the amazing animals that live in our country and learn all about them. The rugby clinic where a coach from Rugby WA came and taught a few of the skills involved in playing rugby.

Fun with West Oz Wildlife incursion – some very brave students indeed!

Every second Friday we also get a visit from the Global Roaming Pilbara Foundation. They bring us amazing presents and are teaching us valuable life skills such as: confidence, self-care, responding to emergencies, first-aid, self-defence and decision making.

Our Years 5 and 6 students and the wonderful Global Roaming Pilbara team – such fantastic opportunities

A big focus in our room is leadership and the student leaders have been trying to build their skills by starting initiatives such as our Litter Club on Fridays, awards and PA announcements. Keep an eye out for more initiatives coming soon.

From the Principal

Welcome to Week 3!

We are getting through the term with lots of enthusiasm as there has been some great things happening! A big thank you to our P&C who held a wonderful Mother’s Day stall. We hope all of our Waddington mums, aunts, sisters and caregivers had a fabulous day yesterday.

The students have been enjoying not having to wear masks, however some are still choosing to do so. As the cases continue, you may see relief teachers and support staff through the school as our staff and their families are affected by COVID.

We have started our dancing lessons and the students are thoroughly enjoying learning their routines. Over the holidays, our 40 year old wet area flooring was replaced and the results are fabulous. Room 9 especially looks beautiful and it is such a positive step for Waddington PS. Over the next 6 weeks, we will be having further improvement works to the roof sections of our classrooms. This will cause some disruption, however we have tried to minimise this as much as possible. There will be a note going home in the coming week about these works.

As the colder weather arrives, I would encourage you and your family to get vaccinated against the flu. We have organised for RediMed to come and deliver FREE flu vaccinations at our school on the 31st May 9am – 11am. If you do not have the note to sign up, please come to the office. This is also free for students so you are welcome to sign your child up also for this service (however, you will need to be with them when they receive the vaccination).

Our two Aboriginal artists, Loretta Egan and Noleen Brockman will be starting their new mural in the undercover area over the coming weeks with our students. This has been made possible by the grant from Lotterywest and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. We feel so fortunate to have this opportunity.

NAPLAN will be starting this week for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. NAPLAN allows us as a school to make evidence based decisions around our school programs and to ensure that students are progressing. NAPLAN is not the only measure though, and as you know here at Waddington PS, our students social and emotional learning is just as important. If you wish to access some more information about NAPLAN, please go to Public demonstration site (nap.edu.au).

Room 4 – Learning all about animals!

Room 4 have welcomed in Djeran by taking our learning to the bush walk and drawing our native plants and animals. We are finishing off contour (continuous) line drawings of the flora and fauna in our local community, whilst learning their Noongar names. This links into our theme of the term: Animals! We will be studying Animals across a range of learning areas and you may be lucky enough to see some of our animal work at the assembly in week 9!

Term 2 is always busy and we have started dance, which we have loved. We also regularly practice movement breaks and brain breaks to help us stay focussed! As a class we really enjoy our mindfulness sessions after lunch with Mrs Tomlinson and our stretches with Mr Whitely.

Our maths sessions have been fabulous this term as we have started to delve into multiplication and problem solving. The students have even been able to show some of their amazing learning on Minecraft education, which has also given them the opportunity of working on conflict resolution and team work.

We are excited for the busy term ahead and all the amazing learning that we are going to do!!

Community Notices

Emergency Relief – Support during COVID isolation

Roseworth Child and Parent Centre have made us aware of a very useful resource which families can access if they require support during isolation or are generally experiencing difficulties. Please see the flyer below with the details of the Emergency Relief and Food Access Service which is a free, accessible and phone-based service.

Are you interested in becoming a foster carer?

Children require a safe place to live.  At times, for a variety of reasons, living with family is not the safest option for all children.  Department of Communities, Mirrabooka District, is seeking motivated, caring and nurturing adults who may be willing to attend a local information session to hear about becoming a foster carer.  Foster carers often tell us that making the decision to help vulnerable children and young people and providing them with a loving home has been one of the best decisions they have ever made.  There are a number of foster care options available.  Some are long term, full-time arrangements while other foster carers provide support for short term or short break placements.  Foster carers come from all walks of life.  You may be single, partnered or married, with or without your own children.  As a foster carer, you would be supported by a dedicated Placement Officer.

Interested applicants would need to attend a fostering information session.  We have sessions that will occur at the Mirrabooka District office and the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka. Please see the flyers below for further information.
